Which States Publish School Employee Disciplinary Records?

Every state licenses its public-school teachers, and every state can suspend or revoke those licenses. Whether a parent can look that discipline up online depends on where they live. We checked the official website of the educator-licensing agency in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

What we found

  • 29 of 51 jurisdictions post discipline online as a searchable database or a published list of actions or orders.
  • Of the 24 of those we could open and read, 11 show the reason for the action and 8 link the order itself. 6 show only a name, an action such as "revoked," and a date, with no reason given.
  • 9 disclose actions only inside board or commission meeting records, which a parent would have to search meeting by meeting.
  • 4 show at most a license status in a lookup tool, or make records available only through a public-records request.
  • For 5, we found no public online source of educator discipline on the agency's site, and for 4 we could not confirm either way.

Several lists appear out of date: the newest entries we saw were from 2024 in some states, and one state's page says its list covers actions "through 2012." Many lists cover only revocations and surrenders, not suspensions or reprimands.

Methodology

Between October 10 and 11, 2026, we reviewed the website of the agency that licenses and disciplines K-12 educators in each state and the District of Columbia. For each, we looked for pages on educator discipline, professional practices, ethics, certificate lookup and board actions, and ran up to three site searches. We used only official agency pages; news and third-party sites were used, at most, as hints to find an official page.

We classified each jurisdiction by the most accessible public source we found, from a searchable database to none. For each searchable database or published list, we recorded whether a member of the public can see the educator's name, the action, the reason and the order document. "Viewed" means we opened the page or list and read it; "Agency description" means the tool would not load for our automated check, so the classification rests on the agency's own description of it.

Limitations

  • Websites change. This is a snapshot as of Oct 11, 2026; a state may post records on a page we did not find.
  • Some lookup tools require JavaScript, a CAPTCHA or a login, or block automated access. Where that kept us from seeing results, fields are marked "Unknown," and some states are marked "Could not confirm."
  • We did not test whether each list is complete. Several agencies warn that their postings may be incomplete.
  • This survey covers state license discipline, which is separate from criminal cases. A license action is not a criminal conviction, and many convictions never appear in a state's discipline list.
  • The BadFaculty record counts in the table reflect our own research coverage, not the number of cases in a state.

Data: licensing_survey.json. Corrections: email thebadfaculty@gmail.com.
